On his debut album, “Sunset Radio,” Elijah LeFlore explores the subjects of love and legacy. The versatile soundscapes, coupled with LeFlore’s confessional lyrics, make for a truly remarkable record.

On the intro track, “Tuscan Sunset,” a steady flow of synths are present while the beat slowly builds in the background. With a strong vocal performance, LeFlore muses about his career aspirations over psychedelic production. Less concerned with sleep and more focused on pursuing his goals, LeFlore begins the record on an ambitious note. The intro features clever rhymes from FLOOD who is accompanied by timely backing vocals and adlibs. “She” is an upbeat expression of admiration for LeFlore’s girl and the great qualities she brings to their relationship. July lends his vocals to what is a really heartfelt tribute to the woman he loves.

“Out(her) Space” is a proper name for the album’s third song. The production takes you on a distant journey as LeFlore seeks space only inhabited by him and the love of his life. On “Atmosphere,” he opens up even further. She has his trust and is by his side during life’s highs and lows.

We continue the exploration of their relationship, but it’s not without its bumps in the road. “Bittersweet” sees LeFlore “falling to pieces” following a rift in the relationship. There’s a sense of urgency reflected in the lyrics and the rapid, layered production. Ro Marsalis carries the theme in his standout feature as well — the pain is palpable.

In perhaps the album’s most impactful moment, a future version of LeFlore looks back on his life and all that he has achieved on “Someday” (Interlude). He sings in a heartfelt tone over a beautiful guitar riff. In reflecting on his life when it’s all said and done, LeFlore hopes to be proud of the legacy he’s built. It’s a wondrous love letter written to himself that speaks volumes to the person he is and the person who he hopes to become.

The layers of the relationship continue to unravel. LeFlore explores the process of courting on “Satin Blu.” It includes a smooth verse from Kayo who walks us through his approach with dating. On “Second Chance,” life’s storms keep knocking LeFlore down. He feels lost without the love of his life, but the two rekindle their romance in the end. The voicemail to close out the song is an important moment as they make plans for a bright future.

On the colorful closer, “GOD (Outro),” we find LeFlore in a great place. The production and message hearken back to the cover and the project’s themes. It’s a funky record that reflects LeFlore’s star power. He is determined to enjoy the moment with the woman he loves. This a great soundtrack to ride off into the sunset with.

Bandcamp Bonus: Two exclusive tracks!

For supporters of Elijah LeFlore’s new record, two new tracks will be revealed upon purchase. “Mi Esposa” is a gentle ode to the love of LeFlore’s life. He ponders why such a beautiful soul must endure so much pain and suffering. The song is both heartfelt and heartbreaking. On “Moving Spaces,” LeFlore grows tired and frustrated in his relationship as he progresses in his career. He urges her to stay with him emotionally and to trust the man she knows him to be.

These bonus tracks aren’t simply add-ons. They’re carefully crafted poems that showcase LeFlore’s skill as a writer. The production value remains high as well, giving him space to muse over important emotional topics.
